Ever since White Dwarf 116, I have enjoyed the visual of the Genestealer Chaos cult: a leech of sorts, slowly infiltrating a planetary society for power, and eventually turning to chaos in order to harness even more power in order to further the cult's nefarious goals.

Cults are traditionally (and I use that term loosely) broken down into 3 sections:

  1. The Coven: the leadership of the cult, including the Patriarch and/or Oracle (usually how the cultists refer to the Oracle, a mysterious mystic of unknown power but seemingly endless wisdom), the Magus (the assumed leader of the cult - human in appearance but answers to the Oracle), and the Initiates (members of the inner circle; generally possessed of strength and/or assets deemed necessary for the cult's survival. They might also be descendants of the Oracle).
  2. Brood Brothers: Family members or descendants of the coven, some of which resemble almost full genestealers and as such stay hidden from the general populace as much as possible. They are fiercely loyal to the coven.
  3. Cult Members: This includes member of the cult, representing a support echelon that stretches from PDF (planetary defense force) troops to supply merchants - all have been 'blessed' by the coven (either with genestealer infection, chaos, or a psychic control mechanism). The members form the lifeblood of the cult, but especially as warm bodies to feed into the grinder.

My cult will be centered around a local PDF, pulled into the cult over generations, and infecting other powerful members of society. In fact, the time is almost ripe to claim neighboring planets, as the cult has swooned with power and is ripe for the conquering of local worlds, much akin to an ant colony spreading out to encompass the local area.

With this in mind, this thread will serve as my base of operations for the development of my cult.

The cult starts with the base infiltrator: the lone genestealer who first infects his minions. Perhaps he slept dormant in a long forgotten space hulk, awakening when a salvage operation disturbs his slumber? Or, his eons-long slumber on a remote planet was disturbed by a local militia training operation into a seldom visited continent...Regardless, the cult has to be centered around the being who sowed the seeds of malcontent. In this case, it is my genestealer patriarch. He is an ages-old being, and his directives are known only himself, or perhaps another evil master, but few if any of his followers will know the truth (at least before it is too late).

To represent the patriarch, I turned one of the original genestealer figures from the late 80s:

However, I suspect that this figure has another master, as of yet unknown to most of the cult.

The magus acts as the figurehead of the cult. He is charismatic, powerful, and human enough in appearance in order to 'dupe' society. He is also a psyker, and acts as the vessel of communication between the patriarch and the rest of the cult.

I finished off a couple of squads of brood brothers: third and fourth generation hybrids (practically human in appearance) who serve in the PDF and possess the equipment and tenacity to spread the word of the cult:

I am running the cult as Astra Militarum/Imperial Guard, as they fit the role of a PDF force gone bad. Since the cult has thrived for generations, many of them will have been raised from childhood as devout followers of the cult; as such, they are fanatical followers who live to spread the word of the cult.
Another squad of hybrids, second and third generation, who will act as either vets or scions:

The earlier generations are less human and more bestial in nature: as such, they rarely question orders and are best sent as shock troops for suicidal missions of varying importance.
Finally, a handful of characters, including a Ministorum Priest (in the cult of the many-armed god!), a rogue Commissar (yes, even they can slowly be broken of the emperor's will), a standard bearer, platoon commander, and Primaris Psyker:

Quick update: I completed a command squad, as well as added the final touches to the lord commissar, psyker and priest.

I am also working on an Inquisition force: Ordo Xenos inquisitors who have employed the use of Genestealer hybrids, although one can only guess as to whether or not they actually control the infection, simply unleashing it on their enemies...Or if they have themselves fallen to the infection.
Here are the inquisitors (work in progress), with a brood of Jokaero hybrids.

Every genestealer chaos cult needs abhumans/beastmen, right? As such, I fixed up a squad of beasties, drawn to the corrupt power like flies to a decaying dog turd. Nothing fancy: Gor Beastmen bodies with Catachan arms/bits thrown in the mix, along with some Cadian helmets.

The initial plan was to run them as Penal Legion troops, but with the removal of the unit from the Astta Militarum codex, they will simply play the role of conscripts (at least until Penal troops make a comeback).

A bit of progress has been made: I assembled and primed the Rough Rider hybids: think genestealers infecting a local horse variant, resulting in a cross between a Hormagaunt and equine-based creature. The bodies are from the Hormagaunt kit, with the front legs and head are horses from the WFB skeleton archers box. Thanks to Victoria Miniatures for the lances and mounted legs.

Additionally, I pieced together a sentinel, with a genestealer popping out of the top hatch. I am awaiting more magnets in order to arm it with the proper loadout, and then I will paint it up to match the cult.

More Jokaero hybrids, with their hybrid masters keeping a close eye.

inquisitor-landraider.jpgImage EnlargerOne of the ring leaders: Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Ruften, who recruited a Genestealer-tainted warband, which quickly its 'blessing' spread throughout his entourage...And perhaps bending his will to another master? The inquisitor dons power armor (adorned with a Jokaero pelt, no less), with a Conversion Beamer and Force Sword...And a bionic appendage modelled off of the rending, slashing arms of Genestealers.

He is sporting his Land Raider Redeemer, branded with the cult's personage. The genestealer is my first real attempt at vehicle artwork. It is based off of a couple of excellent Genestealer images that I found online; I rehashed my own interpretation in Photoshop; then, printed it out and traced it with an x-acto knife in order to create a rough outline/pattern. I taped the pattern to the land raider, sprayed it with a dark blue, then used a small brush to trace out the edges with a lighter blue.

My possessed Patriarch has finally been crafted, thanks to a mounting pile of assorted bits. He will most likely be run as a counts-as Inquisitor Karamazov...Thus the power sword and [non pictured] Multi-melta. As the leader of the 'Cult of Duog' (catch, I know ;) ), he is always accompanied by a devoted following of priests.

More to come as I put the brush to plastic.

More work on the patriarch of the Cult of Duog. Base coats applied, and wiring and basing are complete. Now, to finish the paint and details. I also have an old hybrid figure (with power axe mod), and a modded genestealer for counts-as arco-flagellant.

The Patriarch of the Cult of Duog has had the final touches placed. I will run him as counts-as Inquisitor Karamazov, with power sword (chaos touch on it) and multi-melta...And of course the fat ole genestealer sitting on his mobile throne of judgement. I made a cast of my 25 year old patriarch on throne; then, I used clear resin for the cast, and fished an LED into the body. Once he was trimmed up, I build the throne out of a Dark Vengeance helbrute, along with some other bits. An Inquisitor acolyte mans the control booth, while a devout cult priest mans the multi-melta.
